Tips for Professional Networking

The benefits of online networking have never been better. If you’re not already rocking the online networking scene, you should be! To help you get started, we’ll go over some of the do’s and don’ts of online networking.

The Do’s of Professional Networking

  1. Be Personal- the people you are interacting with aren’t robots, and neither are you—by having real conversations with them, you are letting them know that you are interested in them and not just business.

  2. Create a Professional Profile- If your profile is messy and disorganized, chances are people going to be less willing to pass on information about you. Create a neat, clean profile that stands out.

  3. Develop a Well-Rounded Network – While reaching out to people in your relevant industry is important, be sure to expand your communications as far as you can. You never know who knows a person, who knows a person, who knows you, and you have what they need!

The Don’ts of Professional Networking

  1. Networking Only “When You Need It”- Networking is a constant, ongoing process. Don’t let anyone forget about you, or you might discover that someone else has swooped in and taken an opportunity that could have been yours!

  2. Expecting Immediate Results- Networking doesn’t just happen overnight. Instead of immediately asking for a favor or a job after only a day, wait until you’ve established a more substantial connection when networking with people online.

  3. Not Following Up- Don’t be discouraged. Call them, send them that 5th email. Maybe they are just super busy and keep meaning to reach out. Be that reminder!
